Overhead lights were used to create this photo inspired by Gibson on Friday. I realized I couldn’t use bounced lights by umbrella because they left reflections in the eyes, but I needed more direct light than using a diffuser so I opted for using the overhead lights and mounting the camera on a tripod.

Engendered Stereotypes (2008)

Back lighting was used to create this photo inspired by Peterhans. The thought is stereotypes, expectations and status items men feel, use or are. The idea also came from a Women’s and Gender Studies course in which the teacher often states, “white males have all the power.” The meaning is fluid.

Power and Gender (2008)

An umbrella was used to create this photo inspired by Peterhans. The thought is stereotypes, expectations and status items some men feel, use or are. The idea also came from a Women’s and Gender Studies course I’m currently in which the teacher often states, “white males have all the power.” The meaning can change from one person to the next. I purposefully half covered Lincoln’s face (Honest Abe) because his eye is then a point of entry and it is symbolic.
I used an umbrella so more detail would be seen with better contrast.

A two light setup was used on Monday for this photo inspired by Avedon. Two lights were necessary to eliminate shadows.

A two light setup was used to create this photo inspired by Horst on Monday. The transferable concept was stereotypes in society that men always need to be strong and never display weakness, which is what the 25lbs weight represents. Hiding his face was crucial to expanding the photograph to represent all males.
